Andy

This is Andy. He was pulled from Lyons shelter in January 2012, vetted then transported to Second Chance Mutts in CT. Andy has found a forever home and is doing great!

Harley (formerly named "Hayes")

Harley was abandoned like so many others and taken to Hazlehurst Animal Shelter. Harley was adopted to a couple in CT in November after he went to 2nd Chance Mutts rescue. He is now 45lbs and doing great! He loves going to the dog park, going to "dogs after dark" a social event for people with dogs, and playing at home with us. We now know he loves the snow!

Chloe

Chloe Finds a Family. Chloe was an owner surrender from VAC. She has been at Atlanta Pet Rescue for a couple of weeks. Finally she picked a wonderful new family!

Ollie

Atlanta Pet Rescue has found a wonderful new home for our three legged OLLIE.

Arthur

This is Arthur--a giant American Bulldog who came to the shelter back in October. He is 95lbs worth of big baby! An adopter drove from the Tallahassee area to get him, and as you can see, he is doing great. He was heartworm positive, but the adopters treated him. He is living the high life now! Arthur is doing great.

Here is a pic of him and the kids...

Lawson

Maryellen just took Lawson up to Atlanta Pet Rescue this week. He has already been adopted. Lawson was emaciated, found running on a dirt road with a little Boston Terrier. What a lucky boy!

Becca

This is Becca who was picked up as a stray and taken to Hazlehurst Animal Shelter. She was adopted by a couple in North Carolina who drove down to save her. As you can see, she is now a happy house dog living it up on her new bed!

Goldie

This is Goldie. She is a very sweet laid-back girl who gets along well with everyone. She came to the shelter as a stray, became a SOAPS foster, and is now living it up as a pampered pooch in CT!

McGruff

This is McGruff. He has been at Hazlehurst Animal Shelter since he was a puppy. He had a horrible skin infection, and mange so bad that he would bleed when you touched him. McGruff is now healed and is getting his hair back. He went to his forever home just a short while ago to get a second chance at life! As you can see, he is a very happy boy.

Rex

This is Rex from Hazlehurst. He lived about 3 years of his life in a makeshift dirt pen in a neighborhood behind the hospital. Rex had horribly infected ears, was scared to death of other dogs, an infected eye, and a very BAD case of heartworms before coming to the shelter in Hazlehurst. Look at him now! He is healthy, went to New Jersey for a second chance, and got adopted. YAY for Rex! (Rex is the Golden mix on the right.)

Abbie

This is Abbie. She was pulled from Lyons shelter on October 15th. She was fostered by Marla. Abbie was selected by South Jersey Rescue and transported to NJ where she has already found her forever family!

Rowdy

This is Rowdy, who know lives in Punta Gorda, Fl.

Sparkles

Well, my story about getting Sparkles starts with my Great Niece Gaby. Gaby and her brother and sister came to spend the summer with us. Gaby's birthday was coming up, and she asked me if she could get a dog that was all her own, but there was a problem. She lives in AL. And she couldn't take the dog home when she left. I pointed all this out to her but she still wanted one. So we looked on Petfinder, and she saw a dog she wanted.

Well, when we went to get the dog she saw some beagle puppies. I knew she wanted one of those pups just by seeing the look in her eyes. I told her she would have to clean up after Sparkles, give her a bath, feed her and play with her.

Gaby's brother and sister said they would help.

Yes, they helped to play with her, feed her and give her a bath, but when it came to clean up her messes, they told Gaby it was her dog, so she had to do that.

Well, they have gone back to AL, but Sparkles is still here with us, growing and playing with the cats, running with the neighbor's dog. Right now she is in one of the chairs sleeping. Oh, Sparkles was 2 months old when we got her, now she is 5 months old.

Kolby

I adopted Kolby from SOAPS about 4 or 5 months ago and it was the best thing I ever did for myself! I moved to Savannah and did not really know anyone, so I decided to get a dog. Brooke Butler posted a picture of a few dogs on her Facebook page and I saw the one of Kolby and instantly fell in love! He has been one of the best pets I have ever owned.

When I adopted him, he already knew how to fetch and he was potty trained. He did chew on things from time to time, but all in all, he was a great choice. He has been my buddy because I don't know a lot of people here. He sleeps with me, wakes up with me, goes on walks with me, and he is spoiled rotten.

I recently stayed at a hotel and got a room with two queen size beds because I knew he would want his own. Sure enough, he crawled up in the middle of one of the beds and fell asleep! He loves taking car rides, too. He sits up front in the passenger's seat, sticks his head out the window and just rides! To this day, I still have him and I am supposed to move soon, but I won't move anywhere that will not allow me to have a pet because anywhere I go, he is coming with me!

Cooper

Cooper and his new bff - Jade is a black Lab mix rescue puppy that friends of ours adopted about a month ago -- she's much younger than Cooper, and he was great with her.

Amy

This pretty Walker hound was a stray never claimed at Lyons shelter. Through the help of cross-posting, she found her new owner and home in FL. SOAPS pulled "Amy" in July and got her ready for her new mom to drive all the way up to get her! See "Amy's" new owner's comments below about how she found her, and how pleased she is with this girl from Lyons shelter.

Samson

This is a picture of Samson and his new "sister" Alexia. Martha (in the white tank top) is his new mom, and the woman holding Alexia is her friend who happens to be a dog trainer. She also thought Samson was wonderful!

Omar

Omar was a product of a dog Donna Still was fostering from VAC. He went to K-9 Life Savers last Monday. He is in his new home & even has a Nanny!! I'm jealous!! Just wanted you to know that Omar is doing great. He has made himself at home and he is a super dog. He is smart, playful and a cuddler. He knows his name and has been to the vet for a checkup. He is very healthy and the vet said he is a great guy. He is eating well and loves attention, but can also go to sleep in his bed and be happy.

This weekend he stayed over night at our nanny's house and he loved her 2 dogs and tired him out (yorkie and English bulldog). He is great with other dogs as well. He is a bit like the ever ready bunny--He keeps going and going and then just stops. In the short time he has been with us he has become a big part of our family. By the way, at his vet visit he weighted in at 3.4 pounds so he is growing well. I will continue the updates. Thanks for introducing us to him and vice versa....

Shoney

This is Shoney. He was a black Lab that was hanging around "Shoney's" and being taken care of my the Onion City Lounge manager. She loved him but knew she could not keep him. She looked after him since she lived at the business. Shoney was transported to K-9 Life Savers and his new parents are absolutely in LOVE!!

Baby

The little black puppy in the pic was our "Baby." She and her littermates were pulled from Lyons shelter. Baby went on our transport to NY where Posh Pets found her the perfect home.

Skye

This is Skye. This poor pup lived several months in an open crate covered by a tarp in the HOT July and August heat before he came to the shelter. He had no hair. Look at him now! He is living it up inside at his forever home!

Roady

This is Roady. He came to Hazlehurst Animal Shelter with neglect and heartworms. His adopter drove a long way this week to get him and as you can see he is a very lucky boy. His new mommy will be going to vet school soon.

Tex

Holly had little Tex from Lyons following her everywhere till he left for Atlanta Pet Rescue. Tex now has his new forever family. Looks like he will be very spoiled.

Mike

Mike was adopted today at Atlanta Pet Rescue. He was only there 4 days and found his forever family. Looks like he will be happy.

Norbit

This is Norbit in his new home. He is from the Lyons Shelter. SOAPS pulled him and he was fostered by Karen Crane while he waited to be transported to K-9 Life Savers! Now he is in his new home and is doing great!! Even after recovering from heartworms.

Josey

This is Joey (Josey) from Lyons shelter and was transported to K-9 Life Savers. She is now known as "Josey" and has definitely moved on up! Thanks to all who helped! Just wanted you to know that Josey is doing very well. We are sooooo happy with her. She is
a doll and very smart.

She sleeps at the foot of our bed on a small comforter which is underneath a bench. She spends most of the night there and sometimes just crawls under the bed and stays there for a while. She seems to be comfortable with that kind of privacy. I guess her life
has never been very quiet. She didn't eat anything until Thursday afternoon (although she stole some wet cat food from our cat's bowl!) even though we tried every kind of wet and dry food imaginable, even the food that Dee brought. We took her to the pet store and they tried to give her all kinds of treats but she didn't take anything. She's funny. She knows what she wants and doesn't want.

She is very independent but insecure at the same time, which is an interesting combination. But she ate yesterday and we will eventually figure out when she likes to eat. We were able to give her the powdered worm meds in the food today and I am to do the same tomorrow and Sunday.

She absolutely loves everyone. A bunch of neighbors came over after Dee left and she went up to everyone to greet them. Everyone who sees her on the street makes a fuss over her. Just wanted you to know that we love her a lot already and the feeling seems to be mutual. The kitties are doing well considering Josey has only been here for two days. Jessie, our 15 year old girl, has been very good and they even walk pass each other in the house. Jacob, our 13 year old boy, who is a big cat -- 17 lbs., but a big baby - still cowers around Josey, but there is no aggression from any of them.

We did hear Josey bark. She saw a big black lab across the street from where we were walking and starting barking at it. I will have to pay attention when we are around larger dogs. She just may be tired of big dogs in her life who pushed her around. She did fine with our neighbor's small dog.

I hope to get her to our vet sometime next week for her checkup and get her some flea meds. And we'll get her to your vet soon, and get her heart worm treatment started. Please pass this info on to Barbara and Dee or just forward this email to them. As I said, we are enjoying Josey immensely and hope that she will soon know that this is her forever home. John and I appreciate all your work in helping make this connection on Josey's behalf. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all that you do for the little critters of the earth who are not treated as they should be.

Here's a photo of Josey after a bath and hanging out on the sofa!!

Teddy

Teddy was a yellow lab mix taken into Lyons shelter around October 1, 2010. I am attaching a pic of him when he was at Lyons shelter. When I first got his pic and each time I visited, he got a little extra attention from me. He had this sweet, humble personality that thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated any attention he got. He was an all around great dog, however, Teddy had an old fracture to this back leg which had healed.

He got around fine and used it without any problem, however it was a strike against him. I sent his picture again and again to every rescue I had contact with. I even sent him to a rescue for dogs with physical problems hoping that someone could squeeze him in. I got nothing.

Teddy spent a few months at the shelter, and I checked on him each time I visited. Finally, I had a new rescue contact...South Jersey Rescue. Denise, with SJR, selected a few dogs and then asked me who I thought would be a great dog and who was most in need. After telling her about Teddy, she agreed to take him. He was one of the few that made it out that week of January 17th, 2011. As soon as Denise confirmed, I called Mary Ellen Davis to go down first thing that Monday morning and get him out and to the vet. He had been at the shelter long enough.

So, from there he was fostered and then transported to Atlanta by Hallie Webb. Once Teddy was settled in with his foster mom, Denise, he had heartworm treatment, recovered and was adopted. Denise said everyone at her vet's office loved him and begged her to keep him. Denise totally agreed that Teddy was a "special dog." Now Teddy is in a home and is the personal pet of Michael Monaco, who is quadriplegic. He cannot thank us enough for Teddy. Please see his message below and the first link about Michael's story. The 2nd link is Teddy on Michael's Facebook page.

Rylee

This is the little dog that so badly needed a wheelchair. After he was posted on Facebook, we had a donator within minutes. This kind person purchased a brand new wheelchair for Rylee. When we get discouraged, let this remind us that there are still some wonderful humans out there!

Beau

This is Beau. He was found in Toombs County and had been hit by a car. Beau was immediately taken the vet where they repaired his fractured pelvis. Beau was placed into SOAPS foster program. After overcoming his fractured pelvis and heartworms, he has now found his forever home in NJ with South Jersey Rescue. Thanks to his SOAPS foster mom, Mary Ellen, for helping him recover and even house training him!

Hillary

It took Hillary a long time to find the right family. The problem was that Hillary could climb a 6ft fence. She had to find just the right family for her.

Manny

Manny was an owner surrender, looks like he will also be very happy.

Charlie

Charlie, a Chinese crested rescue from Lyons shelter. When I went that day and saw how sad he looked, I had to pull him. My first thought was "No one is gonna want him, he is too old and not that pretty." He was HW negative and received all his shots that day.

Pam put him on our Petfinders site, and sure enough, a couple from Florida drove here Saturday and adopted my Charlie Boy. Please look at all the pics, they are wonderful! This shows how important it is that we keep doing the work we do and how important it is that everyone get more involved and help with all aspects of SOAPS. Just look how we helped a forgotten dog in need and his life now.

Barry

Barry was pulled from VAC, vetted and fostered with SOAPS til he was transported on May 15th to K-9 Life Savers. He has been adopted and is doing great...see him lounging at his new home.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO HELPED BARRY!!

Purdy

Purdy cam from the Lyons shelter as a very young pup with her littermates. She was placed in a SOAPS foster home where a home was found for her. However, after being in her home for a few months, her owner was diagnosed with cancer. Purdy was placed back into one of our SOAPS foster homes and then shortly transported to K-9 Life Savers in Va. She now a new forever home and is doing great.
